Why Should I Use Turnitin?

Unlike some institutions, Doncaster College and the University Centre Doncaster have taken the decision to allow students to upload their own assignments to Turnitin. It is a developmental tool which you can use to make sure that any sources you have used in your work have been correctly referenced. Given the visual nature of the Originality Report, you can also see at a glance, if you are for example, relying too heavily on using direct quotes, rather than paraphrasing. As you manage your own submissions to Turnitin, you can address any referencing issues before you hand your assignment in for marking.

Turnitin FAQs

Q: What file types can be submitted?

A: You can submit MS Word; Works and PDF files through Turnitin. Be aware that PDFs don't always work, especially if they contain scanned information from many sources. Text-based submissions work best in Turnitin, PDFs are essentially image files.

Q: Do I need a separate account for Turnitin?

A: No, Turnitin assignments are managed within Blackboard, just login to Blackboard in the usual way and then submit your assignments to Turnitin as directed by your tutor.

Q: Can I submit more than once through Turnitin?

A: Yes, in a way that is the whole point of providing you access to the system. As it is viewed very much as a developmental tool, it is there for you to use, as often as you need it, to check your work to make sure that you have referenced your sources correctly. You can submit a draft through the system every 24 hours, the draft that is the latest submission, is the one that is retained once the hand-in date has been reached. All earlier submissions are overwritten.
