Copying from newspapers

Our newspaper license covers occasional copying and printing of newspapers.

 The newspapers covered by this are:

  • Financial Times
  • The Times *
  • The Guardian *
  • The Economist
  • The Times Educational Supplement
  • The Times Higher Educational Supplement
  • The Times Literary Supplement
  • Doncaster Free Press
  • Yorkshire Post
  • The Star (Doncaster edition)

Copying journals and books using the CLA license

books imageCopying, printing and scanning still images and text. 

This includes multiple copying for class handouts.  Not all books and journals are covered by the license.  Look at the CLA document search webpage for more details.

  • scanned and digital documents need to be located on a secure digital environment e.g. college e-mail or Blackboard
  • Copying can be up to a chapter in a book, one journal article or 5%
  • For online materials you can only copy a comparable amount of information

Always record the author of the book or journal

In the small print

  • Only copy the right number of copies for the number of students
  • The college needs to own a copy of any books or journals scanned
  • It would be a breach of the licence to slowly copy the whole of a document
  • Digital copies need to be in a secure environment e.g. Blackboard or college e-mail
  • Delete documents when no longer required.  You will need to check on this at the end of every academic year. 
  • Materials should only be scanned if there is not a legal digital copy available

Not everything is covered by the CLA license.

Material not covered by a license

For instruction/ teaching 1% can be copied over a 3 month period.  In June this will change to 5% per calendar year.
